We think of architecture as a form of art.
We think of each design as a work of art that reflects the needs, sensitivities, and ethos of each client. Clients do not merely hire us to provide a series of blueprints; they instead commission a work of art. Our job is to produce a piece of art that they feel is an extension of themselves.
Devin Kimmel, AIA, ASLA hand-drew this neo-classical façade.
Nature is not an afterthought.
We don’t think architecture competes with nature, but as an art form, it can be part of nature. The head of our team, Devin Kimmel, is trained as a landscape architect as well as an architect. This results in a holistic approach to design where nature is not an afterthought but an integral part of the process. Our ability to artfully integrate buildings into their landscapes separates Kimmel Studio Architects from the rest.

We design a wide range of buildings.
We design at all scales. The consistent thread is unmatched quality. Our range includes single-family homes, flats, memorials, museums, restaurants, campuses, sports stadiums — and their gardens. Big or small, traditional or modern, the buildings and gardens we design reflect our clients.
Kimmel Studio Architects designed the interior architecture of the Indigo Octopus store in Bethesda, Maryland.
We are well-versed in traditional architectural styles.
We are students of history. When a site or client calls for a tradition — classical, farmhouse, colonial, shingle or Tudor style — we know the disciplines and enjoy the process.
Devin S. Kimmel, AIA, ASLA designed and drew this neoclassical memorial. The moving memorial was one of five designs singled out from a pool of 350 alternatives. Find out more about this and other memorials in the Institutional Portfolio section of our website.
We renovate and restore historic houses.
We also provide planning and design services for historic sites. This includes public and private clients. As part of our preservation services, we conduct research and documentation efforts and design historically sensitive architecture. Kimmel Studio Architects is the preservation architect for the restoration of an eighteenth-century Maryland mansion.
We also design
award-winning
modern architecture.
Knowing tradition does not imply that we are bound by it. When designing a modern building, history helps us to decide when and where to tweak or even break traditional rules. The large glass windows of the contemporary barn house of the photo are modern, but the shape relies on traditional vernacular barns.
The glass wall ads a wow factor to this modern barn house. Knowing tradition does not mean that we feel bound by it. The shape of this barn house draws from traditional rural buildings of the Chesapeake Bay area, but the glass wall is distinctly modern. We love blending tradition and modernity!
We are experts in waterfront properties.
Because we design many homes along the shores of the bay (both Eastern and Western), we are acquainted with the critical area regulations that apply to waterfront properties. We designed an award-winning waterfront farmhouse and a popular bar taking into account the nature and rules of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.
You will find our designs throughout the country, both on the East Coast and the West Coast.
